Will shops and attractions close during Golden Week In popular areas most shops and attractions will remain open — they want to cash in on all the tourists, afterall. However, in countryside areas and less touristy places, you may find businesses close for an extended period.

Should you travel during Golden Week

Everything will be busier and hotels will be a lot more expensive. Some places even have more expensive entrance fees as they implement a special "Golden Week rate". There's no benefit for foreign tourists to be travelling during this time.

If you are more interested in modern Japan, then you could spend 3 days in Tokyo and 3 in Kyoto. For most people, Kyoto is more relaxing and more manageable, so spending more time in Kyoto results in a more enjoyable vacation.Should you Stay in Kyoto or Osaka In an ideal situation, I would recommend staying a few days in Osaka and a few days in Kyoto. This way, you get to experience the best of both worlds – especially since Osaka has such great nightlife and you'd want to show up early at some of Kyoto's most famous sights.
